It's ain't easy being tall

October 19th, 2006 (08:44 pm)

"Judging by government safety regulations and industry's standardized sizing, everyone 6ft4 and over is considered statistically irrelevant. When allocating space for car, bus, train and plane passengers, and considering life-jackets or other emergency equipment, people over 6ft4 are ignored completely."

So being 6' 8" I'm not significant, nor are any seating or emergency considerations made for me.... THIS is why being tall should be considered a disorder, I should always be given an exit row on an airplane!! Those damn seats give me back and leg problems.

That is all.

A Return... on a sad note

July 25th, 2006 (09:44 pm)
melancholy

current mood: melancholy

So I've been thinking about updating my journal for the last week or so (not that anyone reads it anymore), and I guess tonight I finally felt pushed to do it. Those of you who also read my wife's journal may think it's because we're moving, or because of work, or all the stupid crap that's been happening the last few weeks, but it's not any of that.

I feel crappy because one of my best friends, who I met my first day at Tulane has had a really shitty few months and I finally found out about it today. She sent me and some of our other friends a cryptic email about not having a computer for the next 2 - 3 months and said to call her on the cell phone if we needed her. I don't know why, but it struck me as odd, so I decided to call her. I also thought, "well I've been meaning to call her anyway since we'll be in Orlando in September and we can see her and her boyfriend."

So of course when she answers I say "when I got her email I just couldn't wait to talk to you", and I could tell when she responded that she wasn't 100%. I asked why she wasn't going to have a computer and she told me "it's leaving with Jeremy (her boyfriend)." I just didn't know what to say, they've been together at least 6 years and it floored me. You see she's from New Orleans and lived there her whole life until about 2 years ago when she decided to pick up stakes and move to Orlando with her boyfriend so he could take his dream job at EA Sports (Video Game Company). At the time I asked her about it and said, "Wow, big move, are you guys engaged?" and she told me they would be soon..... Obviously it never happened.

I just feel terrible she quit her job for him, moved away from her family and home so he could have his dream job and he leaves her. A few months ago EA had layoffs and he was an unlucky one... the only other thing I know is now he's decided to go back to Minnesota and that's it. She can't go back to New Orleans because there is nothing left there job-wise and nothing to return to except her family, and so now she is in Orlando alone. She's made some friends, but it's not the same, especially when you have a significant other, you don't have as many close friends or as deep relationships and so I'm really worried about her.

I know I don't post much, and when I do, it's about stupid crap, but I guess I just feel so terrible for her that I felt like I wanted to get it out and put it down somewhere. I talked to her for almost an hour and then Heather talked to her for another 30 minutes, I kind of hope it made her feel a little bit better, we could hear him packing in the background.... I don't know if I really hate him, but I'm just so pissed right now because she's such a wonderful person, and it's not fair for it to happen to her. Plus she's been left for the next 3 months with a lease on their house that she can't really afford on her own. I told Heather that I just want to get on a plane and go down there to give her a hug, and the fact that I can't makes me feel even worse.

She has always been one of best friends, since that day I met her moving in at Tulane. We've always been there for each other, and once when she was very sick I stayed with her and tried to take care of her until her parents came to get her.... I don't know, I just it's silly but the whole thing makes me emotional (I know guys aren't suppose to be emotional about these things, sue me). I figured if I got emotional on the phone with her though, it would have made her cry, so I didn't.... I just don't know what else to say really... I just feel crappy.

I told her we're taking her to Disney with us on Saturday and Sunday that week we're there, our treat using some of my bonus money, and that during that week after our Disney days we'd come hang out with her or go out dancing or to a bar... I'm not even a dancer, but if it makes Heather and her happy I will :)

She's just that kind of friend that no matter how many months or years go by, it doesn't matter.... it's all the same, you pick up where you left off, you take 10 minutes to catch up and you're back laughing and screwing around like old times, a life long friend, and honestly I don't have a whole lot of those, I can count them on my hands, and the fact that one of them is hurting that bad makes me feel just terrible... absolutely horrible, verge of crying horrible. It's just that much worse that I'm impotent in the situation and I can't go take care of her and make her feel better. So that's it... I feel like crap and I wish I could do something....

Death of Terri Schiavo

March 31st, 2005 (05:10 pm)

This was my response to hearing of her Death today:

"Upon hearing of their daughters death, the parent's of Terri Schiavo appealed the decision to St. Peter, who denied the appeal. God Affirmed."

Sorry if this offends, but I think the media and her parents made a mockery of Terri's life... she deserved a dignified death and it was denied her.

The USA Has Gone to Hell in a Handbasket

November 3rd, 2004 (11:39 am)
enraged

current mood: enraged
current song: Rage Against the Machine

I wrote this as a comment in emer13's journal:

"I'm pretty close to leaving the country too, I don't think I can live here anymore.... This election has shown me something: I don't think it was cheating, or interference and it didn't come down to the Supreme Court, this election was legitimate, and I've realized that 51% country are either idiots or evil and I don't have anything remotely in common with them... I am so bitter and angry and militant that I will tell any Bush voter to their face, they are morons and are obviously too stupid to know what's good for them... "

I rarely post as you know, but I have to get this out and down in write... release it from my system. People are sheep, I could go on for pages about the harm Bush has done to our country and the harm he WILL do now that he is retaining his office, but obviously 51% of this country is too ignorant or evil to care.

Why do I say they are ignorant or evil? That's very simple, only someone who is ignorant or evil would vote for this type of man. This is not a regular election and "Boo Hoo my guy lost." This is the election that decided the direction of our country and our very well being, 2 extremely different sets of values, our foreseeable future and there was a clear answer and simple choice and yet the majority of the people in this country FUCK IT UP! Either you don't know the harm Bush is doing to you and how little he cares for any of us, or all you care about is lining your pockets with money and fuck the rest of the people. Thus the majority vote is either IGNORANT or EVIL.

I have been schooled today in the subject of American Values, and I now see clearly that we stand for:

1. Military invasion of innocent countries
2. Tax cuts to the rich and corporations that end up putting Social Security at risk
3. Religious Zealotry that leads to stifling scientific advancement and the removal of women's rights and civil liberties.
4. The destruction of the world environment
and the list continues...

I have NOTHING in common with 51% of this country... I personally think that they are each to blame for the destruction of our country and should be held accountable; and so, I have decided that any and all republican voters will be harassed and ridiculed by me until they want to kill themselves. It's my way of reducing the numbers of the Evil Empire.

What is the Evil Empire? Well the Evil Empire is the Untied States under republican rule. Two branches of our government are firmly under the control of the Evil Empire and soon The Supreme Court will be changed to "better represent out national values." As of next year Bush will have the power of a supreme dictator with the help of his lackeys in the Senate and House. We will be under the tyrannical rule of a man who cares for no one but himself and his cronies, a modern day Caesar. A dictator ruling over our republic.

My quest is to be Brutus, we all must be Brutus so that we can take down the dictator and watch their Evil Empire crumble and burn!

Our Weapon: Bush must be impeached! For what you ask? WHO CARES! It is well documented that the investigations of Pres. Clinton were completely a Republican fabrication to get the President under oath and encourage him to lie. I think we need to take a few pages from the Evil Empire's play book and start fighting fire with fire! We must find a reason or make up a reason to impeach, remove and imprison the dictator!

Until the Evil Empire has fallen, I will not reconcile with the rest of the nation. I will NOT, "Come together to support the President." I encourage gridlock and bitter venomous hatred toward all Republicans until our voices are heard and we have a fair balance of power! FUCK THEM ALL! Our Democratic Senators and Representatives need to REFUSE to work with their colleagues across the isle, I want their to be bitter dissension, I don't want the country to "heal" like these idiot politicians tell me, I only want one thing, Liberty and Freedom from the oppression of the Evil Empire!

This is my agenda and this is my cause, I shall not rest, days, nights, weeks and years I shall fight until THEY are gone!

Exercising my rights as a US Citizen

March 4th, 2004 (01:47 pm)

I was reading CNN today and realized just how close we are to having the US Senate vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment. I decided that it was important to have my voice heard by my representatives in congress. The idea that we would amend the most important governmental document we have just to DENY a particular group of people rights is abhorrent. I don't think it really matters what your political views are, or what religion you choose to practice, as Americans, we need to uphold the rights of all of our fellow citizens, lest we be next. This country is truly about freedom for all who live here and just because some of us don't like the fact that some people have an alternative sexual orientation does not mean we should go against our values. It is the same reason we have the freedom of speech. There are many things that people say and believe that I find distasteful, Neo-Nazis, Skinheads and the KKK for example, but what makes this country great is the fact that I would give my all to protect their rights to believe and say whatever they want. I don't have to like it, and I don't have to listen to it, but I respect their right to do it. No one says you have to like homosexuality or "gay marriage" and none of us have to be a part of it, but all of us need to protect the rights of our citizens to be and live any way they please. I'm for marriage, of any kind, between any people... as long as you love one another, it's none of my business. I say this as a happily married man and a citizen of the greatest country in the world.

Below is the letter (email) I sent to Senators Graham and Nelson of Florida. I also sent a letter (email) to Representative Wexler of the 19th District, but his was more a letter of support since he actually believe the exact same thing I do...

Dear Senator Graham,

I am writing to you in regards to the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment to the United States Constitution. As one of your constituents, a democrat and a happily married man, I urge you to fight this discriminatory measure. I strongly oppose any amendment to our constitution that denies rights to any group of people. The constitution is a sacred document that stands for our values of freedom and equality. If we allow an amendment to be passed that oppresses or discriminates against a certain group of our people, we go against the very ideals of what this nation stands for. For over two hundred years our country has been a beacon of freedom and opportunity for all people. As a country we do not discriminate based on economics, religion, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. If two people love one another, then it does not matter what gender they are, they should have the right to create a spiritual and legal union with the same rights as any other couple.

I hope that as one of your constituents, you hear my words and give them consideration when a vote is made in this matter. I thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Maximilian A. Schriefer
I encourage everyone to send a letter to their representatives in congress so that you can have your voice heard!

Namor cancelled

November 16th, 2003 (11:06 pm)

Namor co-writer Andi Watson has informed ComiX-Fan that the Marvel Comics Tsunami brand series will end with issue #12 in February. The series, which Watson co-writes with former Marvel Comics President Bill Jemas, chronicles the early adventures of a teenaged Sub-Mariner with a romantic flavour.

"#12 wraps up the arc that was planned," Watson told ComiX-Fan. "The decision was made a coupla months ago so it's no big surprise or a case of shoehorning everything in to one last issue. There's closure. There were no plans to write beyond the twelve that are coming out. Is anyone surprised?"

Watson went on to explain that the main reason for the series ending is that it didn't reach its target bookstore audience of teenage girls.

"The idea behind Namor was to create a book that teenage girls would read," Watson explained. "Teenage girls don't go into comic shops, they go into book shops. The target audience for the book will now never see it. It's just another book that got mauled in the direct market and by the fanboys and will sink without trace. But yeah, Bill was keen to reach out to build new audiences for mainstream comic books but it's always gonna be a long term project that requires a longer term consideration of profit and loss. The direct market continues to shrink and appeal to an ever narrower demographic... we all know this, it's been happening for decades. I said the same thing when I started and it still holds true."

After debuting at 43rd place on Diamond Comic Distributor's Top 300 charts in April, the series has shed some 10,000 estimated sales through to October's issue #8, which charted at 112th spot (see OCTOBER 2003 INDUSTRY STATISTICS). Several other Marvel titles still placed lower on the October chart than Namor, including another recently cancelled series in The Crew.

A Namor live-action movie is currently in active development at Universal Pictures, with Road To Perdition screenwriter David Self having penned the script. The Scorpion King star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is currently rumoured to be up for the lead role (see COMIX-FAN NEWS BRIEFS - NOVEMBER 6, 2003), a casting choice that, if true, would indicate that the film will not be based on the Tsunami series and its teenage star.

Look for a hardcover edition collecting all 12 issues of the series some time in 2004
